Coccidiosis is a common parasitic infection found in pigeons. In a recent study, researchers examined 25 samples of pigeon feces to determine the prevalence of coccidiosis among these birds. The results showed that out of the 25 pigeons examined, 21 were found to be infected, accounting for 84% of the sample.
Gender Breakdown
Further analysis of the infected pigeons revealed that 12 of them were male, accounting for 85.7% of the infected males in the sample. On the other hand, 9 infected pigeons were female, representing 81.8% of the infected females. These findings suggest that coccidiosis affects both male and female pigeons equally.
Diagnosis Method
To diagnose coccidiosis in pigeons, two methods were compared: flotation by zinc sulphate and direct examination. The results showed that flotation by zinc sulphate was the most effective method for detecting the parasite oocysts in the birds’ feces when compared to direct examination. The observed differences were statistically significant (p > 0.05), indicating the superiority of the flotation method.
Treatment with Ginger Extract
In the study, researchers also evaluated the efficacy of ginger extract (Zingibar officinale) in treating pigeons infected with coccidiosis. The results showed that ginger extract exhibited high efficiency in treating the infected pigeons. The highest efficiency, reaching 91%, was achieved using a 10% concentration of the extract. This was significantly higher than the efficacy observed with a 5% concentration, which was only 70%.
Conclusion
Based on this study, it is evident that coccidiosis is prevalent among pigeons. Flotation by zinc sulphate is recommended as the preferred diagnostic method for detecting the parasite oocysts in their feces. Additionally, the use of ginger extract has shown promising results in treating pigeons infected with coccidiosis, with a higher concentration of 10% being more effective than a 5% concentration.
